In 1991, the Premio Campiello was awarded to Isabella Bossi Fedrigotti for Di buona famiglia, a refined and intense novel. The work tells the story of Virginia and Clara, two elderly sisters bound by blood, yet divided by opposite temperaments. Virginia is restless, lively, and rebellious against convention; Clara is gentler, more reflective, faithful to the rules she has inherited. Through their memories, the closed world of the respectable bourgeoisie emerges, made up of appearances, family duties, and silent renunciations. The novel alternates between two narrative perspectives: Clara’s, marked by obedience and sacrifice, and Virginia’s, freer, yet no less wounded. The two sisters recall the same events in different ways, while old resentments continue to weigh upon the present.
