🇬🇧 English – Translation In 1966 – the Nobel Prize was jointly awarded to two Jewish authors: Israeli writer Shmuel Yosef Agnon, for his modern Hebrew epic prose, and German poet Nelly Sachs, for her spiritual lyricism on the Holocaust.

Agnon was honored “for his profoundly characteristic narrative art with roots in the life of the Jewish people,” and Sachs “for her outstanding lyrical and dramatic writing, which interprets Israel’s destiny with touching strength.” Agnon (born in 1888 in Galicia) portrayed Eastern European Jewish life and Israeli rebirth with irony and nostalgia. Sachs (born in 1891 in Berlin, exiled to Sweden) transformed the horror of the Holocaust into mystical, symbolic, and hopeful poetry.
