Irish poet, playwright, and mystic William Butler Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923 “for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation.”
Born in Dublin in 1865, he was the first Irish writer to receive the Nobel. A central figure of the Celtic Revival, Yeats developed a poetry rich in symbols, mythic references, and esoteric imagery.
He sought in tradition and the supernatural the keys to understanding modern man. Founder of the Abbey Theatre, he was also a pivotal dramatist for Irish theatre.
His poetic style evolved from the lyrical delicacy of The Wind Among the Reeds to the austere and powerful clarity of The Tower and The Winding Stair.
Also a senator of the Irish Free State, Yeats’s work stands as a profound meditation on destiny, love, time, and history.
