The Strega Prize was founded in 1947 through the vision of writer Maria Bellonci and the support of Strega liqueur producer Guido Alberti. Its evocative name recalls the ancient legends of Benevento, a city long associated with magic and mystery.
From the postwar years onward, the prize became a symbol of cultural rebirth — a way for literature to help rebuild a collective identity after the wounds of conflict and dictatorship.
Each year, a jury of about four hundred intellectuals, the “Friends of Sunday”, selects a dozen newly published Italian novels. From this selection emerges a shortlist of five — occasionally six — which competes in the final vote.
The Strega Prize is more than a critical accolade: it traditionally grants its winner significant media visibility and often immediate editorial success, shaping the trajectory of both authors and books.
Over the decades, with stories of war, small towns, family ties, passions and social change, the Prize has helped shape a collective portrait of Italy — its tensions, its nostalgia, its hopes.
Today, nearly eighty years after its creation, the Strega Prize remains Italy’s most prestigious literary award: a beacon guiding contemporary fiction, a bridge between tradition and innovation, a constant invitation to read and reflect.
