Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920 “for his monumental work Growth of the Soil.”
Born in 1859, Hamsun is considered one of the most original voices in early 20th-century European literature.
His novels explore the tension between the individual and society, nature and modernity, in a lyrical and introspective style. In Hunger (1890), he portrays the psychological descent of a starving writer in the city, foreshadowing literary modernism.
Growth of the Soil (1917) celebrates the dignity of rural life and the deep bond between humans and nature. Though later criticized for his political affiliations, Hamsun remains a pioneer of subjective narration and inner monologue.
His prose—made of silences, gestures, and landscapes—continues to influence generations of writers.
