Pasquale Festa Campanile’s Per amore, solo per amore (For Love, for Love Alone), winner of the 1984 Premio Campiello, is one of those rare books that remain in the heart: a fresco capable of stripping biblical figures of the distance of sacredness and restoring them to the fragile greatness of the human condition. And it is precisely within that doubt, never entirely resolved, that the most moving part of the novel is born: the child he cannot fully understand becomes, day after day, the son of his love. Those who have judged this work irreverent have perhaps failed to grasp its highest delicacy. Behind its apparent provocation, Festa Campanile in fact builds a great hymn to devotion, choice, fatherhood, and forgiveness. The descriptions of ancient Palestine flow clear, luminous, almost musical. A novel that seems as light as a stream, yet leaves in the soul the exquisitely sweet weight of eternal things.
