1991 – Nadine Gordimer: The Moral Conscience of South Africa

by Patrizia Riello Pera, Padova, ITALY

In 1991, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Nadine Gordimer, an extraordinary South African voice and a clear-sighted witness to the wounds of apartheid. Born in Springs in 1923, Gordimer turned her writing into a weapon of truth and compassion, firmly denouncing the racial injustices that scarred her country. Her novels – including July’s People and Burger’s Daughter – weave together private lives and collective destinies, exploring the tension between privilege and conscience, between silence and moral responsibility.

The Nobel citation praised her for “magnificent epic writing which has been of very great benefit to humanity.” Gordimer was not only a storyteller but also a committed witness, often censored, whose elegant and incisive prose gave voice to the oppressed. After the fall of apartheid, her work remained a reminder that literature can still change the world when it dares to tell the truth.
