In 1958, the prize went to Alberto Bevilacqua, who with La polvere sull’erba brought provincial Italy and its moral conflicts to the forefront. The novel deals with psychological violence, authoritarian relationships and suffocating family silence. Bevilacqua’s dry, incisive prose brings to life characters trapped between desire and guilt. The “dust” becomes a metaphor for worn-out affections and crumbling lives. A debut that revealed a narrative talent destined to shape Italian literature of the late 20th century.
