Corrado Alvaro, already a prominent figure in Italian literature, won the 1951 Strega Prize with Quasi una favola, a novel that combines narrative tradition, poetic sensitivity and moral reflection. The work portrays the unease of modern man faced with the rapid pace of social change. Alvaro builds a delicate plot rich in psychological nuances, where countryside and city clash as symbols of two incompatible worlds. The writing is clear, soft, and infused with melancholy. The novel truly resembles an “adult fairy tale,” where magic does not console but instead reveals the cracks in reality. The prize recognises Alvaro’s ability to give narrative form to the inner conflicts of an Italy entering modernity with apprehension. A meditative and deeply human work.
