In 1993, the Strega Prize was awarded to Domenico Rea for Ninfa plebea, an intense and sensual novel set in post-war Southern Italy. The story follows Miluzza, a young woman marked by trauma and condemned to social marginalization within a rigid and moralistic community. Rea crafts a vibrant narrative in which the physical and the symbolic dimensions intertwine, and individual destiny reflects a broader collective condition. His prose is dense and lyrical, charged with ethical tension. The language vividly conveys dialects, atmospheres and contradictions of a South both archaic and strikingly modern. Ninfa plebea is a novel about guilt and innocence, social violence and female vulnerability, as well as a powerful indictment of collective hypocrisy. With this award, the Strega Prize recognized a strong yet discreet voice in Italian literature, capable of blending realism with poetic vision.
