Art and Insight: Transforming Education for Visually Impaired Youth in Palermo, Italy

The conference titled “Nurturing Personal Development and Empowerment of Young People with Visual Impairment through Arts Education”, scheduled for February 5-6, 2025, in Palermo, at the European Institute for Research, Training and Professional Orientation (IERFOP), is poised to be a pivotal event for fostering personal development and empowerment among visually impaired youth through artistic education.

This conference is part of the 2024 Erasmus Youth DEAP project: “Enhancing Personal Development and Empowerment of Young People with Visual Impairment Through Artistic Education.” Co-funded by the European Union, it features prominent figures and organizations from the field of education and support for people with disabilities.

The project presentation will be led by Dr. Roberto Pili, President of IERFOP onlus, who will open the conference. Further contributions will come from Dr. Rocco Di Lorenzo, President of A.R.I.S. (Association for the Rebirth of the Visually Impaired Sicilians), and Dr. Alessandro Melillo, Head of Research and Development at IERFOP. Additionally, various European project managers including Dr. Claudia Serra, Dr. Laura La Scala from PRISM, Dr. Evangelia Psarra from RESET, and Dr. Erika Pihl from SENSUS will share their specific expertise in the field of artistic education for the visually impaired.

A key focus of the conference will be on WP3 – the Transnational Capacity Building Program on arts education for young people with visual impairments, which aims to effectively integrate art into special education. Through sessions like T-3.1, which will define the terms of reference, T-3.2, which will handle data collection and analysis to monitor partner progress, and T-3.3 & T-3.4, reviewing the use of ceramics in the CARE project, the conference intends to explore and expand the educational and therapeutic possibilities of art.

The event will not only provide a learning and networking platform for professionals in the field but will also serve as a forum to discuss and disseminate best practices and innovations in inclusive education. With the attendance of significant European and local stakeholders, the conference aims to strengthen a collaborative network among educational institutions, non-profit associations, and professionals dedicated to supporting visually impaired youth, promoting a lasting and meaningful social impact.
