Welcome to our Amalfi Coast Travel Guide for 2026. Here’s the uncomfortable truth about the Amalfi Coast in 2026: it is, without question, the most over-photographed, over-booked, and over-hyped stretch of coastline on the planet. Bookings are up 143% year-on-year. And yet — it is also, without question, one of the most genuinely breathtaking places on earth. The trick is knowing how to experience it on your own terms.
Why the Amalfi Coast is Dominating Summer 2026 Searches
Italy has reclaimed the top spot in global travel rankings for summer 2026, and within Italy, the Amalfi Coast is the single most-booked region. Search volume has grown dramatically since early 2025, driven by a combination of social media momentum, major travel features in international press, and post-pandemic ‘bucket list’ behavior. If you are visiting for the first time, go now — but go smart.
The Towns: Honest Rankings
Not all Amalfi Coast towns are created equal. Here’s what you actually need to know:
Positano
The most famous, the most photographed, the most expensive. Positano in summer 2026 is genuinely extraordinary-looking and genuinely exhausting to navigate. The narrow staircases, the crowds, the vertical geography — it rewards the patient visitor who books early and stays put. Avoid day trips here: the village is best at 7am or 9pm, not at noon with tour groups.
Ravello
Urban Mood’s top pick. Perched 350 metres above the sea, Ravello is what the Amalfi Coast looks like when you remove the beach crowds and replace them with classical music festivals (the annual Ravello Festival runs July–August), spectacular garden villas, and some of the region’s best restaurants. If Positano is the Instagram Amalfi, Ravello is the real one.
Amalfi Town
The functional heart of the coast and often overlooked in favour of flashier neighbours. Amalfi town has a magnificent cathedral, excellent ceramic shops, proper restaurants without tourist pricing, and ferry connections that make it the best base for exploring the entire coast. Stay here, day-trip everywhere else.
Praiano & Cetara — The Under-the-Radar Picks
Two smaller towns that are finally getting the attention they deserve. Praiano offers dramatic cliffside settings without Positano’s queues. Cetara, at the eastern end of the coast, is a genuine fishing village with extraordinary tuna and anchovy cuisine and almost no tourist infrastructure — which is precisely the point.
When to Go: The Honest Answer
Peak summer (July–August) on the Amalfi Coast is a genuine test of patience. The roads are at capacity, the beaches are packed, and prices are at their highest. Our recommendation: aim for June (still warm, smaller crowds) or September (warm sea, quieter roads, better availability). If you must go in August, book everything — accommodation, restaurants, ferries — months in advance.
Getting There Without Losing Your Mind
The Amalfi Drive (SS163) is one of the world’s great scenic roads and also one of its most congested. In summer 2026, private cars are increasingly restricted during peak hours. The smarter option is to base yourself in Salerno or Sorrento and use the excellent hydrofoil and ferry network to hop between towns. It’s faster, cheaper, and infinitely more pleasant.
What to Skip
- The ‘lemon experience’ tourist traps on the main road in Amalfi town
- Any restaurant on the main beach promenade in Positano — prices are 40% higher, quality 40% lower
- Driving the coast road in July or August between 10am and 6pm
- The boat tours that promise ‘hidden grottos’ — most are neither hidden nor worth the price

The Urban Mood Verdict
The Amalfi Coast deserves its fame. It is genuinely, achingly beautiful. But it rewards the traveler who arrives with low expectations for convenience and high expectations for scenery, food, and atmosphere. Go with time to spare, surrender to its rhythms, and ignore the algorithm. You’ll understand why the searches keep climbing.
