Underdressed and Unforgettable: Faye Webster’s Symphony of Heartache and Humor

THE BEST RECORD OF THE YEAR : Number 8

Faye Webster’s Underdressed at the Symphony stands out as one of my albums of the year, a graceful yet playful exploration of heartbreak, fame, and the curious beauty of life’s small moments. Webster’s fifth album offers a rich blend of indie rock, alt-country, and jazzy orchestral elements, making it a record that lingers long after the final note fades.

Inspired by impromptu visits to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during moments of personal turmoil, Webster channels her experiences into a series of intimate yet expansive tracks. The opening song, Thinking About You, sets the tone with a light, jazzy playfulness, featuring bell chimes and gentle percussion that belie the melancholic undercurrent. It’s a track destined to become a Webster classic – introspective yet vibrant, steeped in both wistful longing and quiet optimism.

The emotional core of the album lies in tracks like But Not Kiss and Lifetime, where Webster’s soft, breathy vocals drift over simple yet poignant melodies. In But Not Kiss, her longing is laid bare, with strings and delicate bursts of chords framing lines like “I want to sleep in your arms, but not kiss.” This juxtaposition of intimacy and restraint encapsulates the album’s delicate push and pull.

Webster’s ability to weave humor into heartache is another strength of Underdressed at the SymphonyLego Ring, featuring childhood friend and rapper Lil Yachty, stands out as a quirky, upbeat highlight. Webster sings with endearing silliness about desiring a Lego ring, and Lil Yachty’s verse – “Me and you the dream team / Always together like string beans” – adds to the song’s playful, carefree energy. It’s this levity that makes the album so enjoyable, even as it explores heavier themes.

Tracks like Wanna Quit All the Time and eBay Purchase History continue this balance of light and shade. Webster’s deadpan delivery of lines like “I used to be self-conscious / Well, really, I still am” feels both relatable and refreshingly self-aware.

The album’s orchestral touches truly shine in Underdressed at the Symphony, the titular track that crescendos into a sweeping, symphonic climax. Webster’s voice melds with cascading strings, evoking the raw emotional release that comes with listening to live classical music. It’s one of the most moving moments on the album, perfectly encapsulating the concept of feeling out of place but emotionally seen.

Closing track Tttttime leaves listeners with a sense of closure and renewal. The stuttering repetition of “time” alongside gentle strings and steady percussion reflects the slow yet hopeful process of healing. As Webster softly sings, “Take a walk, call my mom… I got t-t-t-t-time,” the album ends on a note of light-hearted acceptance.

Underdressed at the Symphony is a nuanced, heartfelt record that captures the essence of Faye Webster’s artistry. It feels like an intimate glimpse into her world – one that’s rich with humor, tenderness, and vulnerability. Webster’s delicate yet powerful voice, paired with thoughtful orchestral flourishes and quirky lyrical moments, makes this album not just one of the year’s best, but one that will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
