2009 – Tiziano Scarpa, Stabat Mater

by Patrizia Riello Pera, Padua, Italy

A refined and evocative novel set in the musical Venice of the eighteenth century.
Tiziano Scarpa reconstructs with great sensitivity a world suspended between art, spirituality, and discipline.
The story unfolds within a Venetian orphanage devoted to the musical education of its young residents.
The protagonist lives within the walls of this institution, where music becomes both language and destiny.
The setting echoes the historic Venetian ospedali associated with the figure of Antonio Vivaldi.
Through letters and inner reflections, the protagonist’s voice emerges as intimate and deeply expressive.
Music becomes for her a space of freedom and personal expression.
At the same time, it represents a strict discipline that shapes the daily life of the girls.
Scarpa elegantly portrays the atmosphere of eighteenth-century Venice.
The city appears as a stage of art, devotion, and cultural splendor.
The novel explores the relationship between talent, identity, and the desire for independence.
Through sound and writing, the protagonist searches for her place in the world.
Music becomes a path toward knowledge and inner revelation.
Scarpa’s prose is lyrical, refined, and capable of evoking powerful sonic imagery.
Stabat Mater ultimately emerges as a compelling meditation on the power of music and the search for identity.
