A Peace Revolution.

October 4th: Not Just a Feast, But a Peace Revolution. St. Francis of Assisi, The Patron Saint Who Never Gets Old.

Assisi and the World Pause for the “Little Poor Man” Who Defined the Future.

Forget the average patron saint celebrations—the obligatory parades and the church-y stuff. October 4th is far more than that. It’s a date that fundamentally shakes Italy (and the world), invoking an ideal so radical it almost seems like a pipe dream: the vision of St. Francis of Assisi.

Yeah, that Francis, the “Poverello” (Little Poor Man).

In Italy, October 4th is the National Civil Solemnity (shared with St. Catherine of Siena), a day dedicated to the values of peace, fraternity, and dialogue. It’s the day when, symbolically, all of Italy rallies around Assisi, the Seraphic City, to offer the oil that lights the votive lamp at the Saint’s tomb. This isn’t just a religious ceremony; it’s a powerful cultural act, elevating a message of hope in turbulent times, standing firm against global conflicts that seem to rage endlessly.

The Anti-Establishment Saint and the Return to Real Life

There’s a reason Francis, almost 800 years after his death (which occurred on October 3rd), remains incredibly cool. His life was a definitive “no” to the system of his time. A rich playboy who chose absolute poverty. A man of war who became the apostle of peace.

His most explosive message? The unbreakable bond with nature.

October 4th is also World Animal Day, and that’s no coincidence. Francis, with his “Brother Sun and Sister Moon,” didn’t see nature as a resource to be exploited, but as a family to be cherished.

And here lies the magic, which spreads from the heart of Umbria all over the globe, reaching parishes in New York and San Francisco (yes, the city is named after him!): the blessing of the animals.

If you ever find yourself in an American church on October 4th, prepare to see dogs, cats, hamsters, and sometimes even horses, all lined up for a blessing. It’s a moment of pure joy, a bridge between faith and love for creation that goes far beyond the boundaries of Catholicism.

Why You Should Care

In a world obsessed with doing and having, St. Francis reminds us of the power of letting go. Letting go of the obsession with possessions, letting go of the fear of the “other,” letting go of the idea that force is the only solution.

Celebrating October 4th isn’t some dry historical reenactment. It’s an opportunity to ask ourselves: Are we honoring our planet? Are we truly seeking peace with those we call “brother” and “sister,” even when they are different?

Assisi, on this day, isn’t a museum; it’s the beating heart of an Italy that still believes another world is possible. It’s the feast of disarmament, simplicity, and a joyful love for every creature. A true, unstoppable, Franciscan Revolution.
